Hyderabad, the land of the Nizams, Pearls and of course the world-famous Hyderabadi biryani, is a must visit for its food culture. From clubs to cafés to small lanes lined up with variety of food, Hyderabad has it all. Personally, being a big foodie, I believe that the true taste of food comes only from the streets and in a city like Hyderabad, the variety of street food you’ll find is extraordinary. From idly ki bandis to panipuri wale bhaiya, every nook and cranny of Hyderabad screams food. Go around the city, explore the culture, explore the food and don’t forget to try these dishes.


IDLY & DOSA

One of the most famous Hyderabad Street foods which is commonly served as breakfast in the state, but can be eaten for all three meals by Hyderabadis, these idly & dosas are healthy and yummy at the same time. The mouth-watering variants of Dosas like the Pesarattu Dosa which is a nutritious variant made of moong dal and is served with ginger chutney or the Cream cheese dosa, paneer cheese dosa, Pizza dosa and other 99+ varieties of Dosa with leave you speechless with your mouth full. Simply head to any of the tiffin bandis which are spread throughout the city and order any of the dosas or idly and take my word for it, you will come back for more. Another must try and an absolutely unique Hyderabadi dish is the Mysore Bhaji, which are donut like maida balls served with different kinds of chutneys and will leave you wanting more.

HYDERABAD HALEEM

Hyderabad Haleem, a dish popular from the time of the Nizam rule and a Hyderabad Specialty is sure to excite your tastebuds and be a one-of-a-kind experience. Most popular during the Ramzan season, it attracts people from every possible corner of the city and as soon as the clock strikes 6pm, people gather at Haleem stalls awaiting their turn to grab some. Lentils, pounded wheat and meat are boiled together to make the stew and then a thick paste, finally touched up with fried cashews and rogan, Haleem is creamy and loaded with ghee.


Best Places to Try: Cafe 555, Sarvi, Mehfil, Chicha’s, Shah Ghouse, Pista House, Lucky Restaurant

IRANI SAMOSA & CHAI

Irani Chai is a light-colored tea, with 75% milk and 25% tea decoction and is termed as a superb dessert in a cup. With a lot of joints adding their own twist to the Irani chai like the sodabottleopenerwalas meethi chai, you have to have this served with melt in the mouth, hyderabads Osmania biscuits. Along with the chai unlike traditional bread or bun maska, hyderabadis prefer Irani samosa which are generally filled with onion and are bite-sized or kheema samosas, which has a filling of mutton keema in it. Available at almost every corner, they can be as tasty as ever and a great snack in the evening.

Other than the popular individual items, when it comes to street food, Hyderabad has so many gullys lined up with some of the most scrumptious treats from all over the country but with a unique taste that you will only find in Hyderabad, So if you are looking for a One stop Eat it all destination for street food in Hyderabad, get your bellies and rush to these spots.


DLF

Located in Gachibowli, DLF gets its name from being right opposite to the DLF office and is a lane that is lined up with various bandis serving different, different cuisines. The must try places here are Momos Delight serving Kurkure momos, GD’s serving the juiciest chicken burgers, Varalakshmi Tiffins for hot hot Mysore Bhaji & Idlys and Chinese Delight for amazing Indo-Chinese food. Not to miss, Infinity Drive In that is a 2-minute drive from the DLF street and is a luxury drive in. It has a separate seating section and is more often than not always full. With joints like Funnel Hill Creamery, Chennapatnam, Asian Wok, Mango Tree Cafe and more, Infinity is lit up with yellow lights and is truly a delight to visit. The best part about this street? It’s open till 4 am in the morning, serving delicious food to the crowd that seems to never subside.

CHARMINAR

This area is true to the nizam architecture and is located in the old city of Hyderabad. Along with the food culture, the Charminar are is known for its night bazar as well. From beautifully cooked Chicken to freshly made fruit cream, the Charminar area captures the true essence of the nizam influence on Hyderabadi food. Must try places in this area are the legendary Café Nimrah for its Irani chai and Osmania biscuits, Milan Juice Centre for its freshly squeezed juices and fruit creams, Mughal Bakery for their fragrant bakery items, Shabad for their biryani and lastly Al-Akbar Fast Food for the Chicken 65 and Irani roti. All this food, along with the beautiful view of the Charminar is sure to leave you mesmerized.
